Botanical Garden

The Madeira Botanical Garden probably has some the finest examples of flora the Island has to offer. Encompassing an area of about 8 hectares, it sits on top of a cliff roughly 3km from the Funchal city centre. 

There, not only can you see most of the floral species endemic to Madeira, but also fossils and exhibits of some of the local marine and terrestrial fauna. 

Since it sits rather high above the city, there are many places around the gardens with breath-taking views over Funchal.

These gardens are Open to visitors every day of the year from 09:00 – 18:00.

 

 

Palheiro Garden

The Palheiro Gardens are right next to the golf course East of Funchal. Inside, apart from the beautiful gardens with a wide variety of colourful plants and flowers, you can find a magnificent 5 Star Hotel and Spa, perfect for a weekend getaway.

These gardens date back to the early 1800’s and the great collection of exotic flowers and trees stand as a testament to the fantastic weather conditions of Madeira.

You can visit the gardens at any time of year daily from 09:00 – 17:30.

 

 

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

The Monte Tropical Gardens are truly a sight to behold. Not only do these gardens boast a fantastic collection of plant and tree species, they are also home to an amazing collection of fine pieces of art collected over the years. 

The themes vary from the traditional Portuguese azulejo, to the exotic Asian and African motifs, including a koi pond and even some Torii Gates.

These gardens can be visited all year round from Sunday to Monday from 09:30 – 18:00

 

 

Stª Catarina Park

The Santa Catarina Park is one of the more well known among the islanders, being that it is very easily accessible since it sits right in the city centre. Many events are held here around the year such as festivals and concerts. 

The natural amphitheatre provides an amazing view of the stage wherever you may stand, and you also get a great view of the east side of Funchal. If you happen to be on the island during a warm summer evening, the sunset is truly magical. 

You don’t want to miss any event that may be happening during your stay.

Access to the park is free of charge at any time of the year.

 

 

Quinta Vigia Garden

Quinta Vigia is one of the smaller gardens on the list, however, that doesn’t mean it falls behind in terms of beauty or things to see. 

This park is part of the residence of the president of Madeira and has been home to many historical figures since it’s construction in the XVI century. It sits right next to the Santa Catarina Park on slightly higher ground, right above the port of Funchal. 

Inside, a diverse number of flowers and tropical birds can be found, as well as garden fountains surrounded by small paths dotted with colourful flowers.

You can visit these gardens from Monday to Friday from 09:00 – 17:00
