 An unforgettable coastal paradise hugged by commanding cliffs is just a few words to describe the ancient fishing village of Paúl do Mar. Today, banana cultivation and fishing are the main sources of income of the inhabitants of this town. Just as in Camara de Lobos, in Paúl do Mar fishermen, with their large families, live in neighborhoods close to the harbor. In the 1960's most of the inhabitants began to immigrate to countries like Panama, in search of better living conditions.

How to get to Paul do mar?

Traveling by bus(80,107,115,142) to this place from Funchal is a bit complicated, is almost 3 hours of the trip and you would not think about wasting any time on your vacations. Rent a car and explore the island.

This trail begins near Maktub Bar, although you can start anywhere in the town.

Hike Distance: The total distance of the hike is 7 kilometers

Hike Duration: The hike will take you about 3 hours

Hike Difficulty: This trail is not too difficult although the 900 meters of incline will test out your endurance

A scenic hike up to Prazeres will you impressed with a remarkable path consisting of 2600 steps. At the end of the hike, you will be rewarded with an amazing, unique, and privileged view of the sea and mountains. 

We then headed down the western end to join Vereda dos Zimbreiros, which is a trail that leads to Zimbreiros viewpoint. Perfect for an epic sunset!

 

From here you can go back or keep on track, explore the neighborhoods and join up with a levada, which would eventually lead to the descent back down into Paul do Mar.
