February is here, and it brings with it more reasons to visit Madeira. The charm remains, and between December and February what happened
Known as the Pearl of the Atlantic, Madeira offers dazzling views and much more. Here are some places you can visit and be dazzled by Madeira Island.
1 – Old Town
It belongs to the parish of Santa Maria Maior, the oldest neighborhood in Funchal. The Old Town is characterized by the old houses with the painted doors and numerous restaurants around the area.
2 – Farmers Market
Located in the centre of Funchal, this large market is the best known on the Island. In this market you can find many varieties like fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers, fish and much more.
3 – Monte Palace Garden
In this seven hectare garden we find the old Hotel Monte Palace and several different zones of gardens.
Located in Monte belongs to an art collector Joe Berardo.
In these gardens there is the biggest colection of Cica in the world from South Africa.
There is also an area reserved for indigenous species and a Oriental inspiration garden.
4 – Core of typical houses of Santana
Located in Santana is a space of prevention in memory of the local patrimony, where are some typical houses of Santana.
These houses began to be inhabited in the century XVI. Built with thatched roof has a basic structure two triangular wooden frames. The doors are painted in bright colors.
These small houses are divided into two floors: the bedroom upstairs and the living room downstairs.
5 – Caves of Sao Vicente
The caves of Sao Vicente are of volcanis origin. Were formed for 890 years ago from volcanic eruptions ocurred in Paul da Serra.
They are the first caves of volcanic origin to be open to the public.
The caves have a course of 700 meters and inside you can see volcanic stalactites and lava accumulation.
6 – Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools
These natural swimming pools were formed by volcanic lava, where the sea enters and leaves naturally.
Its a place with an area of 3800 m2. There is a swimming pool for children and a playground.
Is one of the most attractive places of Madeira Island.
7 – Levada Rabaçal / 25 Fontaines
Is located in the central part of the Island. It´s the biggest levada in the Island with a duration of two to three hours.
The Rabaçal is covered by a dense vegetative mantle, creating an enchanted forest environment.

8 – Cabo Girão Viewpoint
Is the highest cable in Europe with 580 of heigh.
This viewpoint belongs to the contry of Camara de Lobos and affers panoramic views over Funchal and Camara de Lobos. There is also a suspended glass platform where we can see everything below.
9 – Nun´s valley / Eira do Serrado Viewpoint
Belongs to the contry of Camara de Lobos. This village was formed by volcanic activity.
Is very isolated having only a single road that connects to the rest of the Island.
One of the local events is the celebration of the chestnut.
Better is the climb up until Eira do Serrado where it offers magnificent views of Nun´s Valley.
10 – Pico Ruivo
Belonging to the contry of Santana is the highest peak of Madeira Island, with a course of 2,8 km and a duration of one hour and half.
Along the climb are found several shelters because of gross climatic variation, being often this area stay above the clouds.
At the top you can see Nun´s Valley, Pico Grande, Paul da Serra and Pico do Areeiro.
